In today’s world, mental illness and distress are prevalent, contributing significantly to community disability. Simultaneously, there’s a growing interest in enhancing positive mental health and wellbeing, driven by advancements in positive psychology and mental health promotion. Positive Psychiatry, a term introduced by Jeste et al. (2016), describes a dual approach to mental health that emphasizes building strengths, supports, and healthy lifestyles alongside treating illness and distress.
In this course, we’ll explore various aspects of good mental health and provide an overview of major mental disorders, their causes, treatments, and ways to seek help and support. The course features numerous Australian experts in psychiatry, psychology, and mental health research, along with “lived experience experts” who share their personal stories of recovery from mental illness.
We adopt an evidence-based approach to a range of strategies for enhancing mental health, including exercise, relaxation techniques, and the importance of love, relationships, and fulfilling work. Topics will range from creativity and yoga to psychiatric medications and psychotherapies.
